Hideki Yukawa's (1907-1981) theoretical calculations (performed in 1934) were of fundamental importance for understanding of the forces acting in the atomic nucleus. Hideki Yukawa was honoured with the Nobel Prize in Physics "for his prediction of the existence of mesons on the basis of theoretical work on nuclear forces" in 1949.
